Keep in mind the automatic tranny stuff is pressurized, while the t-case is not. First of all yes it will damage the transfer case with no oil in it or even low oil. if it is just a seal then it is easy to replace, but if it means splitting the transfer case this is not a job for the diy, unless you have experience with transmissions or transfer cases.
