May 21, 2013 · So back to my problem, why does the engine goes down and back up in 200 to 500rpm ratios when running at less than 2,400 rpm. At the higher rpm I either don't feel/notice it or the engine runs fine (maxes out @ 5,900 rpm (34 mph)) Also this 4-stroke idles like my 2 stroke 25 hp (rough) and therefore vibrates and sounds rough at 800 rpm. Make sure all connections are clean and tight. Use a multimeter and test for voltage at the battery- you should have 13.8 volts+ at 1200 rpm. If not, prepare yourself to replace the voltage regulator. Mercury regulators are crap, so I would suggest an aftermarket regulator from CDI. G.

A check of the owners manual should point out that this is an overheat alarm and that just because the water pump is working does not mean the engine is cooling properly. A thermostat that is stuck shut will cause an overheat at idle.
