Its speed means you can get hits in even in very narrow openings, and being able to exploit even very slight mistakes rather than having to wait for the optimal time to strike WILL make you deal more damage in the long run, even disregarding counter damage. It is easy to get bleed resist, and bleed is the main reason to use uchigatana. Without landing bleed, the damage in general is pitiful. Having a lot of low damage hits is fine, if you can get them in. A scythe though gives you the ability to dish damage out over a larger range, even if the player uses a shield.
