Beretta is a gas gun. It does not rely on recoil to operate. You can shoot very light loads in it which reduces recoil. Benelli is an inertia gun. It requires a certain amount of recoil to function consistently. Inertia guns tend to recoil more and have less flexibility in the shells that will operate it properly.Between these two, as others have stated, the main difference is the weight, the other difference is the M4 has two small gas pistons while the Beretta has only one large piston. The Beretta will cycle much faster than the M4 as well. The M4 is supposed to be able to cycle even if one of the small pistons goes tits up.

The Beretta 1201 (recoil operated) was closer to the Benelli M2 The 1301 is gas operated (unless I'm mistaken) and is a lot closer to the M4 because of that. I've owned an M1 (HK marked) M3 and 1201 (a couple of them).
